Get the Work You Want

On my drive home tonight, I saw a handwritten message taped to a stop sign. It read: Garage Sale. Buy our stuff so we can eat.

Damn.

The world seems out of whack these days, and many creatives feel stuck in neutral.

ADCD takes this to heart as we believe all creatives deserve a creative life. With that, a good number of our board members and close friends to our club congregated to pump out this whimsical little read.

Get the Work You Want is a friendly reminder of the little touches we need to progress. Network. Stay organized. Propsect. Fine advice from some of Denver’s finest talent: copywriter Jordan Sher, illustrators Shaw Nielsen, Jarrod Wheaton, Ali Colby, Steve Schader, Sarah Bergman, Liz Richard, and Paul Vismara.

What the Font?

How loyal are customers? It's one thing to change a soda formula, or offer some offbeat product or service. But in the case of IKEA, changing its iconic typeface has actually stirred one hell of an uproar. So much, that Time Magazine wrote a feature article about it. Check it out here.

Art & Copy Keeps Rolling

Couldn't leave the office before your usual time of midnight to catch Art&Copy? Have no fear. The Denver Film Society has extended its showing by a week. You'll just miss it for another week, because you're at the office until midnight.

Just sayin'.

Haven't seen this for an anti smoking campaign, other that the threat message, but at least it is a different visualization. Would love to see how effective it is. Neogama/BBH, São Paulo, Brazil

Art and Copy, A new film just premiered on Aug 21

You knew it'd be good, inspiring, motivating. What you didn't know is you should 1st see it, then make sure anyone you work with should see it. Then call your clients, they should see it too. Big thanks to Mary Warlick and the One Club, The Starz Film Center and Rebecca Wood for bringing this to Denver. Catch it before it leaves town.

Yo may know Ji Lee from Google where he is a/the lead CD or from his fantastic work on his very own Bubble Project. Now he is here to clear the way for you to understand intimacy on a social network scene. Think of it as a filter of how much you are "into" that girl/agency/client/friend.

NESynth

While YouTube mashup vids are no new news, and iPhone apps are becoming more mainstream, there is something to the power of 8bit sounds that is hardwired into our souls. That makes thi hard not to like. The app is NESynth, and available for download, although the skills to make the music good are not yet available for download.

Humansynthesizer

This is fun and it does seem to have some actual physics to it, wish it were more believable though.

Uhhhh, just watch.

Lets see, thin, yep. Light, portable yep. Fast? Memory? Battery Life? Viral probably. Which means that your brand will be recognizable, but not for a computer, certainly for ass catching. So I looked up the website, and yep, they don't sell ass catching. So I'm left wondering, how did I miss the market segment that likes to associate their asses with their computer. Even if they think it is funny.

Which begs the question: How far will you go for brand awareness at the cost of brand experience. Love to meet the guys who sold this in.

Stiller and Shaq

This is a fun gem of a commercial. It might just be the completely random combination of elements, or the inspiration from faster, better internet, or maybe the simple joke of Ben barely over the wheel of the car that makes me have to like it.

Art & Copy, a new film coming Aug. 21

Just Do It. Arguably the most iconic tagline of the late 20th century.

Did you know Dan Wieden crafted this masterpiece for Nike shortly after hearing a captured serial killer say “Let’s do it.” to a firing squad?

Migrate south from Portland to San Fran, and advertising legend Hal Riney tells a more personal story. He opens up about his father being hauled off to prison, which later steered Riney into advertising as an outlet for self-expression.
On a surface level, that’s not exactly a stirring story. Then again, consider Riney masterminded the commercial for Ronald Reagan that all but locked him in for a second presidential term.

Such stories may be a far cry from the days of Mad Men, yet have been vital factors in molding modern American culture. And such stories loom large in Art & Copy, a new film produced by The One Club and premiers August 21 at Denver’s very own Starz! Film Festival.

Directed by documentary filmmaker Doug Pray (Scratch, Surfwise), this hypnotic visual treat glides us through historic campaigns and the advertising luminaries who conjured such powerful ideas. The film captures the energy and passion of Lee Clow (Apple), George Lois (MTV and Tommy Hilfiger), and Phyllis Robinson (Clairol). Rare interviews from Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein, Cliff Freeman, Jim Durfee, Mary Wells and Dan Kennedy also splash onto the silver screen.

We get a unique peek under the tent of the creative process and show how products jumped off the shelf to become lifestyle icons the world loves and embraces. And in a world polluted with junkyards of bad advertising, it’s important to observe and celebrate the power of good advertising.

Art & Copy captures that.

We invite you to come see Art & Copy, with wine and food served following the showing. This mesmerizing film will be introduced by Rob Reilly from Crispin, Porter + Bogusky. Rob is a partner and co-executive creative director, who served as global creative director on Burger King (yes, he’s responsible for the creepy King). Today, he and his partner oversee digital and brand communication for powerhouse clients at CP+B such as Volkswagen, Microsoft and Coca-Cola.

Art & Copy
• Sponsored by Art Director’s Club of Denver and Denver Film Society.
• Premiers Denver, August 21 at 7:30 p.m.
• Starz! Film Center at the Tivoli (9th and Auraria, Denver)
• Appetizers and wine, following the show

Go, Bees, Go

Do you know what Colony Collapse Disorder is? It's worldwide condition that's wiping out honeybees at catastrophic rates, and nothing can be done about it. Goodby Silverstein & Partners and their ice cream client, Haagen-Daaz beg to differ.

All hail experienceproject.com, an educational format that eggs on people to make active leaps and bounds for different causes.

The smorgasbord of social media (Twitter, Facebook, flickr) has side dishes of challenges, including eating nothing but natural foods for seven days straight. Getting your own virtual bee, and planting flowers are delightful applications you can engage in.

Stella Artois

When you are going to do retro, do it right, that would include bringing Robert McGinnis out of retirement to bring his iconic style to life. Mother did just that and the results are stunning (admittedly more than the average consumer will get) and well worth the effort. Even the pencil is amazing. McGinnis still has it.

Samsung Camera Trick

Samsung seems to have figured a new way to crack the YouTube Viral Video phenom: Magic. They put in this well produced, amazing trick, featuring a camera, and its video quality (nice job there) and then ask the audience to tell them how they did it. To one up that idea, they can track how users use the video. Pretty great thinking and production, especially on a YouTube exclusive.
