thanks aiga and 303

A shout out to our friends at AIGA and 303 for hosting the fall FAC. A nice turnout as many of us ended our microhibernations to venture out for some food, beverages, and good 'ol fashioned networking. Thanks everyone.

Next January, ADCD and AIGA's next FAC will take us up to the Republic of Boulder to hang out with the creative minds of Moxie Sozo. Watch your calendars, and we'll see you there.

Best Letterpress

Letterpress is cool, yeah we know that. But it's really cool when it highlights type specifically and even better when the concept is clever. I'd vote this "Best use of medium." Simple, but smart.

The Etsy page where you can find it says it is sold out, probably due to the mention on Swissmiss (hat tip to you, miss).

Who wins

Who wins the seasonal package competition here? Pepsi for bringing home the brand (and BooB) in their classic typography or Jones Soda bringing the brand in a highly tongue in cheek approach. The flavors may push tip the scales for me.

Amazing Work

Really amazing work that does a nice job misleading you then hits you with a hard hitting message. Great insight.

HOT

Love it when you actually involve the audience. (Are we now considered a major media outlet now that we have picked this up?)

Try doing this

I like this for two reasons: 1: Makes a lot of sense for the product, only using a as a vowel works with the well known experience you get when playing and 2: That had to be a ton of work, not easy. Bonus: all copy is rarely used and rarely done well. Waiting for the english version.
This story was written in Spanish using only words containing the “A” vowel, and has no translation in English. The text tells a tale that make complete sense from beginning to end, and all the words used exist in the Spanish language. The tales is about Abraham and Sara. She is tired of their relationship because Abraham hurts her and is not a good lover, so she decides to kill him. To achieve it, Sara Summons Satan and he indicates how to find Baltasar, the man who will become her lover and will kill Abraham.

What's a deadline?

During the cash-strapped civil war, prisons were too expensive to build. So boundary lines were drawn in the dirt in which captured soldiers ran the risk of being shot by guards if they dared cross them.

Deadlines have a different meaning today (obviously). Especially for students:

• Student Show entries are due at a drop off location no later than Oct. 26.

• Registration for our live-concepting contest The Brief is also Monday Oct. 26th

This is the work of photographer Vincent Laforet, using a Canon 1D MKIV and no lighting, at night. Amazing camera and work. Read all about it and see the 1080p video on his blog.

Saw this last night and was struck with how insightful and how unusual it was. More sharp ideas out of Cactus fo' sho.

Pixar Ever-after

Is this, logo work, type, wrong. Probably but it is fun to watch. College humor live through the Pixar tragedy.

Type Makes it Better

Seems to me that type makes it all better, even if it is about drug usage world wide. See more of the work from Harry Pearce and Jason Ching. This shows Global prevalence estimates of injecting drug users and HIV among injecting users for United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. More details on their site.

PechaKucha Night Denver, Vol. 7 Tonight!

PechaKucha means chitchat in Japanese. For you, that means a free night of seeing a whirlwind of artistic eye candy as a diverse group of local designers share 20 images of their work for 20 seconds apiece. Bruce Mau, DoubleButter, Charles Carpenter and cypher13 (seen above) were among July’s PechaKucha presenters.

The seventh edition of PechaKucha Denver kicks off Tuesday at 8:20 (doors open at 8:20) inside the Buntport Theater, 717 Lipan Street in Denver. There is a suggested donation of $5.

www.pkndenver.com has more details. Thanks to Buntport Theater Company, Tewell Warren Printing, Bhakti Chai, and ADCD for sponsoring. The event was also devised and shared by Klein Dytham Architecture.

Looking to Promote Your New Product

How do you demonstrate a new product feature? Nikon's new camera has a projector built in, so someone thought why not strap it on dancers and have them get jiggy with it. Brilliant idea. Fun introduction to a fun product.

Ukraine's Got Talent. And a lot of it.

This is a Promotion

Not that this could ever happen here, can you imagine a US record company allowing its artist to release work before someone bought it? Brilliant.

Birds in Flight

These photos of birds by Richard Barnes were taken over a two-year period in a suburb of Rome. They "beautifully highlight the tension between the individual and the collective. They also highlight a growing field of research studying how animals self-organize into moving bodies. The results may provide clues to questions ranging from how cells aggregate around a wound to how financial markets swing on the aggregate choices of individuals." Very cool. Check out more scientific photos here.

Chew on that bit of knowledge. NYT (we've got some work to do).

Amazing Building

Love this building, from afar the pixel look is fun but the wow, for me, happens when you get close and can really read the art. Nice juxtaposition of having to "zoom" in on the pixels to get the beauty. Frog Queen, or the Prisma Engineering Headquarters designed by SPLITTERWERK, Austria.

Love Fun-loving Work

More work from Tribal DDB, Stockholm, Sweden. They call it the Fun Theory. You can get people to do more as long as you make it fun. Seems like a simple diatribe I would like to see more people try, especially in our business.

Tools for freelancers: What does it cost you to hang a shingle?

Before you can price a product or service, you need to know your costs to provide it. This CDB calculator is one tool to help you get a handle on those costs. But it's only as accurate as your inputs, which can be hard to estimate. Err on the high side, since unexpected things can catch up with you, and as you bill more, your expenses almost surely will increase. As high as totals from this calculator may look, experience will probably prove them low.

The calculator was designed by The National Press Photographer's Association, but a little creative thinking will make it a useful exercise for any freelance professional.

Students: The Briefies Oct. 29

Thursday, October 29th : 5:30 to 10pm
Metro State College of Denver: The Tivoli, Room #640: 900 Auraria Parkway, Denver CO
80204-1852

The Art Directors Club of Denver, in conjunction with Crispin Porter + Bogusky, The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs, and Future Leaders of Design (Metro State's Communication Design Club), are hosting The Brief—a student concepting and design competition open to design and advertising students at all levels.

The Brief simulates a late night at an ad agency. 16 teams of 4 students (comprised of a Senior, Juniors and a Sophomore or Freshman from regional Colleges and Universities) will be directed by 8 Senior Creatives from the local Design and Advertising community through four hours of pencil and paper concepting and digital execution. The teams will respond to a creative brief written by CP+B Senior Cognitive Jamie Webb for the client Kendall Peterson,
The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs Public Art Administrator. Each team will have minimum one laptop, but the focus will be on traditional concepting—thumbnail sketches and mind maps followed by a presentation of digital roughs.

In addition to receiving valuable real world experience, and networking opportunities with local art directors and with each other, student winners will receive scholarship money.

Cost: $20 ($15 group rate for 10 or more students registering on 1 credit card.)
Prizes: Registration fees will be pooled and awarded as scholarship money to the winners.

Unleaded Thinking

Your eye just caught these stark and beautiful posters for beatgasoline.com, a Nike-driven platform that matches human spirit vs. the horsepower of four-wheeled beasts. McKinney, Raleigh.

So Much Said

With oh so very little. Great idea. Imelda Ogilvy, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Nothing but Copy

But that's why they call it radio. Unique, fun and insightful look into what goes into some radio scripts. Unusual work out of DraftFCB, Paris, France.

Food for Inspiration or Belt Advertising

Some of the best ads on this not-often-used-medium. My favorites would have been home town kid's Sukle's work and the Phillips oh so thin work.

Your code isn't this good

This isn't traditional, it is coded flash. Now, ask yourself "How?", and then say out loud, "Wow!". And go experiment just like Erik Natzke. Beautiful work that is truly pushing what is possible.

Pop Culture

Apple, you have just entered into the pop culture memory, how do we know this? Because your ads have been ripped off to educate children. You must be so proud.

Dynamic

Love this art. Highly technical, timely, and has a sense of humor, not to mention scale. The new work of artist Chen Wenling.

Beautiful Art

Mentos, yes that Mentos, has really stepped up their look and and advertising. Really love that all the shadows are off one light source. Someone really worked this art well.
